
In 1877, Tombstone had grown rapidly and become
the largest town in Arizona due to the discovery of Silver. The Southern Pacific
Railroad created Benson to be used and a shipping depot for Tombstones booming
silver mines. Cochise County was cut from the eastern Pima County with the seat
being Tombstone. (1881-1929) The County seat was moved from Tombstone to Bisbee,
when the Silver ran out and the town dived into poverty and disarray. Cachise,
as it was often misspelled, was the only county named after an Indian.
Cochise County is 4,003,840 acres in area and has the largest amount of state
owned land. In 1890 Cochise County had 6,938 inhabitants.

President William Howard Taft signs Arizona into
statehood on the 14th. of February 1912 as Arizona becomes the 48th.
